Vincent B. Opanel, 87, of Ringtown, passed away late Saturday at Ridgeview Health & Rehabilitation Center, Shenandoah Heights, where he had recently been a guest.
Vince was born in Pattersonville, June 11, 1926, a son of the late Joaquim and Anna Kowelonek Opanel.
He was a graduate of the former Ringtown High School, where he excelled as an athlete. After graduation, he served in the Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Ringtown.
He was employed locally in the mining industry and was retired, having last worked for the former Rosa Breaker, Shenandoah.
Vince was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time gardening, mowing his grass and keeping himself busy with little projects. He was a hunter and fisherman who enjoyed nature and the beauty of the outdoors. Vince also enjoyed playing golf, whether on the course or just off his yard.
In addition to his parents, Vince was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
Vince is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Makarewicz Opanel, Ringtown; sister, Vera Tedesco, Shenandoah; nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing that will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, North Center Street, Ringtown. Immediately following the viewing, the Rev. Jim Torpey will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. Vince will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery immediately following the Mass. Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, Ringtown, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
