Ottis A. "Junior" Fisher, 88, of Zion Grove, passed away early Monday at Ridgeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Shenandoah.
Born April 22, 1927, he was a son of the late Ottis and Edna Singley Fisher.
After high school, he served in the Army, having been a prisoner of war during World War II, and was stationed in occupied Japan after the war.
Ottis was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church.
Junior worked on several local farms in his younger years. He then ran the Girard Manor pumping station for the Mahanoy City Water Co. and later retired after working for many years for Caln Building Stone.
He loved spending many hours outdoors hunting and fishing. He knew every landmark in Long Hollow, Stranger Hollow and the surrounding areas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Herring; sons, Claude and Ottis III; daughter, Judy Tobias; stepsons, Walter Blackwell, Clyde Teter and Charles "Wilt" Teter; stepdaughter, Nancy Blackwell; brothers, Ralph and Levi "Pete;" sisters, Ruth Schell, Mildred Kowalski, Martha Hofnagle, Edna Houser, Sarah Brobst, Myrtle Fenstemacher, Juliet Brobst and Dora Smeck.
He is survived by children, Joanne Platukis, Weston, Clyde Fisher and his companion, Cheryl Ambrose, Ringtown, and Ricky Fisher, Zion Grove; grandchildren, George Platukis III, Brian Platukis, Deana Greco, Kelly Barletta, Nicholas Fisher, Melodie Conley, Joshua Fisher, Antoinette Cieslukowski, Candice Fisher, Chris Gubala, Barbara Baranowsky, Lorraine Gubala, David Gubala, RC Gubala, Debbie Blackwell and Bruce Blackwell; 28 great-grandchildren, and expecting the arrival of a great-grandson in the near future; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his companion for more than 25 years, Helen L. Teter, Zion Grove, and her four children, John P. Teter, Carl Teter and Marion, wife of Barry Davis, all of Zion Grove, Earl Teter and his wife, Pattie, Ringtown. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as "Pappy Fisher." He was especially fond of Helen's youngest grandchild, Mimi, whom he helped raise.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Church, Zion Grove, with the Dr. Rev. Phillip Smith officiating. Relatives are invited to attend a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, 412 W. Main St., Ringtown, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.
