Leo J. Kuzma, 93, of 168 Wood St., Ringtown, passed away Thursday at his residence.
Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Getusky Kuzma, in 1999.
Born in Shenandoah, Feb. 12, 1922, he was a son of the late Martin and Anne Dzienis Kuzma.
He entered the Army, serving in the cavalry division, then transferred to the airborne division, becoming a parachute instructor. Ten days prior to his scheduled discharge from the Army, the attack on Pearl Harbor engaged the United States into World War II. His orders prohibited him from being discharged, so he then volunteered for the 101st Airborne Division. During his deployment overseas, he was seriously injured in battle while defending a major bridge in Holland. He was awarded the Bronze star, the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Bronze star attachment, World War II Victory Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Badge and the Marksman Badge.
Leo was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 289, Ringtown, where he served as vice-commander. He was also a member of the Shenandoah Fish and Game Club, the Park Crest Fish and Game Club and the East End Field and Stream Club, Shenandoah.
Leo was a former member of St. Mary Church, Ringtown.
He worked for a period of time at the Shen-Penn mine, Shenandoah, as a truck driver.
The last member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas, Joseph, Daniel and Edward; a sister, Loretta.
Leo is survived by two daughters, Ann Kuzma, Brandonville, and Janet Kuzma, Ringtown; a son, Dr. George Kuzma and his wife, Alyssa, Zion Grove; nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, North Center Street, Ringtown, with the Rev. Jim Torpey as the celebrant. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church. Interment with military honors will take place in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights, immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901.
