Helen L. Teter, 93, of Zion Grove, passed away Monday at home.
Born in Ringtown, March 6, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Martha Klingerman Long.
She married Harold Teter in Nuremberg Lutheran Church parsonage on Christmas Eve in 1943 between services of Mount Zion Church and Emmanuel Church. The organist was called upon to be the required witness to the ceremony.
After graduating top of her class from Ringtown High School, she worked on family farms and was a homemaker for most of her life, with the exception of about 10 years while working in the local garment industry and for the former Yankee Plastic and Broadmor Homes factories in Ringtown.
Family and faith were very important to her. She thoroughly enjoyed baking and cooking. For many years, she cooked Sunday dinner for her immediate family, extended family and anybody who happened to be around, usually serving between 25 and 40 people. Her kitchen was often open to young children; many helped cook, bake or can goods under her guidance. Others thought the children were too young to help, but Helen enjoyed their assistance, making them feel loved and useful. People used to look forward to getting a loaf of her homemade bread or some of her bean soup at Mount Zion Lutheran Church social events. She always had homemade chocolate chip cookies on hand for family and company.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1983; sons, Clyde, in 1970, and Charles "Wilt," in 2015; grandson, Nathan Fetterman, in 1987; her companion for more than 25 years, Ottis "Junior" Fisher, in 2016; brothers, James "Mouse" Long and Allen "Buzzer" Long; a sister, Blanche "Babs" Grow.
She is survived by four children, John P. Teter, Carl Teter, Marion, wife of Barry Davis, all of Zion Grove, and Earl Teter and his wife, Pattie, Ringtown; 21 grandchildren, Bill Teter, Randy Teter, Aaron Teter, Phoebe Shaw, Fawn Baldauf, Ricky Teter, Chris Teter, Dennis Teter Sr., Kevin Teter, Adam Teter, Sandy Lewis, Tina Davis, Corey Ulp, Amy Martz, Marie Burkland, Katie Lex, Michael Teter, Julie Donnelly, Mimi Teter, Lacey Setcavage, and Lindsey Sheeler and 12 grandchildren's spouses; 32 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Grove. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, 412 W. Main St., Ringtown, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will take place immediately following the service in Mount Zion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to Mount Zion Church, in care of John P. Teter, 657 Ringtown Road, Zion Grove, PA 17985.
