Bernard Hughes, 76, of Ringtown, passed away Monday at his residence.
Bernie was born in Shavertown, Dec. 12, 1939, a son of Hilda Stevenson Hughes, Douglassville, and the late Ronald Hughes.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Ringtown, where he served on the church council for many years and was also the former caretaker of St. John's Cemetery for several years.
He served in the Marines Corps and was a member of the Ringtown American Legion Post 289.
Bernie worked at the former General Cigar Co., Mahanoy City, before taking a job at PP&L, from where he retired.
He was a member of the Ringtown Valley Sporting Club, Ringtown Valley Fire and Rescue Company, Six County Firemans Association and the Park Crest Fish and Game Club.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Patricia "Patsy" Schell Hughes. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 22. He was also survived by a son, Kevin, and his wife, Debra, Zion Grove; two sisters, Henrietta Gallup, Ringtown, and Michelle, wife of Alan Ross, Douglassville; a granddaughter, Jennifer, wife of Jesse Yencho, Ringtown; a great-granddaughter, Karleigh, who was his little honey; nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, West Main Street, Ringtown, with Pastor Jay Serafin officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Bernie will be laid to rest with military honors in St. John's Cemetery, Ringtown, following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are asked to be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 112 W. Main St., Ringtown. Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, Ringtown, is assisting Bernie's family during their time of need.
