Agnes A. Barrow, 100, of Bethlehem, a former resident of Ringtown, passed away Tuesday in Bethlehem.
Born in St. Nicholas, Dec. 14, 1913, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Jenny Cathers Adamson.
She was a graduate of the former Mahanoy Township High School and Stroudsburg Normal School, now East Stroudsburg University, where she acquired her degree in physical education and health science.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Ringtown, and also the Ringtown Senior Citizens, where she enjoyed playing bingo and pinnocle.
Agnes taught and retired from Blue Mountain High School, both teaching health and physical education, as well as being an archery coach. She was also noted for her gymnastics exhibitions. She excelled in swimming, tennis, bowling and golf, a passion she shared with her husband, Tom. She was also proud to have achieved two holes-in-one.
In 1990, Agnes was inducted into the Jerry Wolman Sports Hall of Fame, being the second woman ever to receive this honor at the time. She was also a member of the Blue Mountain Hall of Fame.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Thomas Barrow, the former barber of Ringtown. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, David, John, Luther and William; and four sisters, Jenny, Martha, Thomasine and Anna.
Agnes is survived by a son, Thomas A. Barrow, Westcliffe, Colo.; two daughters, Dorothy M. Barrow, Sarasota, Fla., and Virginia Rahn, Bethlehem; a brother, Robert B. Adamson, Aston; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, 412 W. Main St., Ringtown, with the Rev. Craig Zimmerman officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Agnes will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Old White Church Cemetery, Ringtown, following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are asked to be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 84 E. Main St., Ringtown, PA 17967.
