STANLEY BURKEVAGE

Stanley Burkevage, 93, a former resident of Trout Run Road, Zion Grove, passed away early Monday morning, May 25th at Loyalton of Bloomsburg where he had resided for the past several years.

Stanley was born in Lost Creek, PA on September 23, 1915, the son of the late Stanley and Eva (Gibas) Burkevage. He was a 1934 graduate of the Conygham Twp. High School, then served in the US Army in the 738 Field Battalion under General Patton during World War II. Following the war, he was a member of the 12th Corp. Army Glee Club Blue Danube Choir. He studied Agronomy in Weinsteffan, Germany before returning to his family's Zion Grove Farm, where he continued to study agriculture under the GI Bill. He was employed by GLF Farm Service and Beechly-Hardy Seed Company before retiring from the Alcoa Aluminum Company in 1976.

He was a member of St. George's Church Shenandoah, and was a life member of the Ringtown American Legion, serving as former commander and chaplain. He was also a member of the Ringtown Lions Club, the Ringtown Senior Citizens, Shenandoah Catholic War Veterans, Moose Lodge, Schuylkill County Knights of Lithuania and the former Union Township Fire Company. Stanley was also the last elected Justice of the Peace for Union Township, serving from 1968 to 1974.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella (Socker) Burkevage on May 17, 1961. Three brothers, Joseph, William and John, and five sisters, Nellie Fritz, Anna Wysoski, Margaret Hennessey, Alberta Majikas and Leona Urewicz . A grandson, Jordan J. Burkevage also preceded him in death.

Stanley is survived by three daughters and one son: Jeannie M. Burkevage of Mahanoy City, Helena P. Sterner of Orangeville, Joann D. Burke of Orwigsburg; and John S. Burkevage of Zion Grove. Stanley is also survived by a brother, Albert Burkevage of Centerport, PA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, North Center Street, Ringtown, at 10 AM on Friday, May 29th. Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday evening from 6-9 PM and on Friday morning from 9-9:45 AM at the Stauffer-Breznik Funeral Home, 412 West Main Street, Ringtown. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights, immediately following the Mass.
