Joan M. Opanel, 84, of Ringtown, passed away on  Wednesday, September 7th,  2016.

Joan was born in Shenandoah, on August 14, 1932, one of three daughters of the late Helen (Senkowski) and Peter  Makarewicz.

She attended St.Casimir's catholic school and was a graduate of the former JW Cooper High School, both in Shenandoah.

Joan was employed in the banking industry until retirement, having been an executive vice-president and head cashier for the former Union Nation Bank of Shenandoah, where she was also a member of the Board of Directors.  She was then employed as a manager for the former Pennsylvania National Bank Shenandoah.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.   Joan loved going on trips to Atlantic City, and more recently trips to the local casinos.  

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Vince Opanel in April of 2014.

She was the last member of her immediate family being preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Kohler, Lucille Greenman and Marie Towardzik.  She is survived by nieces and nephews, including her nephew and caregiver Michael Tedesco, and his wife Louise.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 10th at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, North Center Street, Ringtown.

Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing from 9 - 10 AM at the church, prior to the mass.

Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband Vince at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery in Ringtown, following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Joan are asked to be made to the Hillside SPCA, Pottsville.
